Organic Box, 5th January 2012

fruit: Conference pears, bananas, Cox apples, Star Ruby grapefruit, oranges
veg: Onions, carrots, Star Victory potatoes, sweet potato, beetroot, mushrooms, leeks, Cavolo Nero

Happy New Year everyone!  It’s been a lovely break for us and we’ve had time to have lobster and chips in Whitstable with good friends as well as snuggle up at home with tons of good food and relaxed children (well, mostly).

This week we are making ministrone soup with the cavolo nero, which is lovely and very filling.  It also freezes well if you make a large pan of it.

Tonight’s menu is  sweet potato gnocchi - if you haven’t tried to make this, it is definitely worth doing!  You make a double batch, then freeze half.  It makes a great quick supper straight from the freezer into boiling water until tender.  Mixed with a melted gorgonzola or dolcelatte sauce (add a little milk and some nutmeg) and you are straight into gourmet territory!  You may wish to stick to cheddar with ham, bacon or tomatoes if you are trying it out on the little ones for the first time though..

We may not be able to afford eating out much this month, but we are jolly well going joyfully eat in.

Organic Box 14th December 2011

fruit: bananas, apples, pears, oranges, grapes
veg: green peppers, Crown Prince Squash, mushrooms, celeriac, onions, potatoes, spinach, sprout tops

Really getting icy this week, so a couple of soups on the menu: sprout & stilton and chicken & squash.  I’m also planning to make some eggs Zakynthos with the peppers and Hugh Fernley Whittingstall’s Celeriac gratin with cream and chilli.

Organic Box 7th December 2011

fruit: bananas, Spartan apples, Conference pears, kiwi, oranges, avocado
veg: onions, courgettes, leek, carrots, swede, chard, Nicola potatoes, Crown Prince squash

Very blustery today when I went to pick up the bags; it truly felt like a labour of love!  Lots of good, solid fruit and veg to cook, which is fab considering the weather.

This week I’m planning some speedy courgette pasta, a rooty veg curry and some chard and ricotta pasta (pretty much a staple of ours).  I’ll also make a couple of apple pies as I’ve got a thing with the local pie shop pies and there is absolutely no reason why I shouldn’t make them myself (other than pure laziness).

Organic Box 30th November 2011

fruit: bananas, kiwis, pears, Spartan apples, oranges
veg: spinach, Savoy cabbage, onions, beetroot, mushrooms, carrots, Jerusalem artichokes, Cosmos potatoes

Well, I have to confess this is the week I’ve written on the blog for over 6 months as M has been helping me out.  I’m glad to be back just in time for the cold season though!

I’m planning to make jerusalem artichoke and bacon soup, minestrone and some beetroot and feta salad with most of this lot!
