fruit: bananas, gala apples, red plums, conference pears, myagawa satsumas
veg: romano potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, round cabbage, onions, leeks, yellow and red pepper, basil, tomatoes
I just love opening these bags in my kitchen. I dig through for the little piece of paper that tells me what everything is, get out our thick paperchase notebook where all boxes are recorded and then begin, picking things out one by and one, and arranging them in little groups on the work surface, ready to be counted.
Even though things are getting wintry with the whole cold, wet London thing beginning, these veg are definitely saying coleslaw. Fresh, herby and crunchy with some lovely baked potatoes, salty butter and strong cheddar. I was planning to make a batch of my sundried tomato pesto this week as part of a new baby hamper for a friend, so the basil is a big bonus. The mushrooms, leeks, tomatoes and peppers will go into a chilli con carne; something of a regular feature in our kitchen, happily guzzled up by babysitters and babies alike. I serve it with Nachos that have been sprinkled with chopped chilli and cheddar, then grilled, so the heat is optional. I’ve already started on the curious green satsumas. Absolutely delicious, although everything in me was screaming ‘Stop they aren’t ripe’ as I tried to peel the first one.
